This is Beowulf's tragic flaw. 

20.)Lines 2532-2533 This fight is not yours, nor is it up to any man except me.

This is Beowulf’s first problem. He is old and should have let his warriors fight the dragon like Hrothgar did with Grendel. Beowulf is to proud to let that happen though. Any monster that terrorizes his land is going to have to fight him. 

21.) Lines 442-455 "If Grendel wins, it will be a gruesome day;... Fate goes ever as fate must."

There is no way Beowulf is going to let Grendel win with out a fight. Beowulf is saying that no matter what he will fight to the death. He is also willing to fight under the conditions of Grendel and fight with no armor, which he must do in order to defeat Grendel because he can’t be killed with anything made by man.
