DJ 31-41

31.) "Whale road" is an old way of saying the ocean another one is "swans road"

32.) Grendel: It is an Anglo-Saxon name. It may mean "huge, monstrous being" or "grinder(of bones)" "carnivorous."

33.) Lines 473 to 479 "It brothers me to have to burden anyone with all the grief Grendel has caused and the havoc he has wreaked upon us in Heorot, our humiliations. My household-gaurd are on the wane, fast sweeps them away into Grendel's clutches - but God can easily halt these raids and harrowing attacks!"
This is one of many examples that Beowulf believes in god or the person who found it changed it from a Pegan to Christianity.

34.)Wiglaf: A Germanic dithematic name, combining wig (fight, battle, war etc.) and laf (what or who is left). I think his name could mean sense Beowulf left him in charge of the treasure and sense his name mean one who is left this could mean that he became king after Beowulf's death.

35.) I think the dragon in Beowulf is a symbol of greed because even when the thief only took one goblet the dragon freaked out and got all mad and went burning down towns.

36.) Lines 217 to 218 "Foam on her breast, like a bird she flew;"
This quote uses personification and smile. The author give the ship human characteristics the ship calling it a she. One refers to ships often as female but it also gives the ship qualities of tender and nurture. The ship guides them the right way to the Danes just as a mother guides her baby to walk.
37.) Lines 3074 to 3075 "Yet Beowulf's gaze at the treasure when he first saw it had not been selfish."The only reason Beowulf's gaze at the treasure wasn't selfish was because he didn't want any of it. The only thing that matters to him was  his own honor and glory.
38.) Line 3023 "but the raven winging darkly over the doomed will have news, tidings for the eagle of how he hooked and ate, how the wolf and he made short work of the dead."
The raven is a symbol of death and evil and the The dragon could be seen as the raven because it is causing doom and death around the kingdom and it kills Beowulf.

39.) The one man from Beowulf's army the stays while the others run away and helps Beowulf kill the Dragon represents the theme of a Good Warrior. He is the only one that is loyal to Beowulf. The others run away which will give them a bad reputation.

40.) Lines 607-631
Even though Wealtheow is the Queen of the Danes she still has to serve the men in the mead hall. This represents the theme of The role of Women. It doesn't matter that she is the queen, she is still treated worse that other people. She is also a peace pledge which makes her a symbol of peace.

41.)  lines 408-424 "When I was younger, I had great triumphs... (Their enemies brought it upon themselves, I destroyed them.)"
This is the begging of Beowulf's epic boast. Which represents his pride.

22-30

22.) Beowulf's name could mean a couple things it could mean (be-wolf) or (bee-hunter) which is a keening for "bear."

23.) Lines 120 to 125 "Suddenly then a God-cursed brute was creating havoc: greedy and grim, he grabbed thirty men from their resting place and rushed to his lair..."
Then Beowulf is told to have the strength of thirty men in each arm which I believe is contrasting telling us that Beowulf will beat him because he is double the strength then Grendel.

24.) Lines 273 to 278 "So tell us if what we have heard is true about this threat, whatever it is, this danger abroad in the dark nights, this corpse-maker mongering death in the Shieldings' country. I come to proffer my wholehearted help and counsel."

This is Beowulf coming and trying to come and pay off his fathers wergild to Hrothgar and to try and create a name for him self which a good warrior should do.

25.) Lines 425 to 427 " Now I mean to be a match for Grendel settle the outcome in single combat." This means that Beowulf is going to fight Grendel with no weapons fist to fist to try and make an even bigger reputation for him self.

26.) Lines 832-835 "Clear proof of this could be seen in the hand the hero displayed high up near the roof: the whole of Grendel's shoulder and arm his awesome grip."
This is telling us that they hung Grendel's arm from the roof I think it represents a trophy for  Beowulf's accomplishment for killing Grendel. Which this is also part of being a good warrior.

27.) Lines 2020 to 2025 " Sometimes Hrothgar's daughter distributed al to older ranks, in order on the benches: I heard the company call her Freawaru as she made her rounds, presenting men with the gem-studded bowl, you bride-to-be to the gracious Ingeld.
Freawaru is a peace pledge and her name means peace pledge she also a good example of the role of woman.

30.) Lines 2510 2515 " Beowulf spoke, made a formal boast for the last time: "I risked my life often when i was young. Now i am old, but as king of the people I shall pursue this fight for the glory of winning if the evil one will only abandon his earth-fort and face me in the open."
This shows us that Beowulf is a good warrior but not a good king he should have let his men fight the dragon like how Hrothgar let Beowulf fight Grendel but he wants the glory for him self. Which this leads latter to when Beowulf needs his men the most they run away unlike in the beginning when he was fighting Grendel they were trying everything they could do even though there swords didn't do anything.

22-24

19-21

19.) lines 2345 to 2347 Yet the prince of the rings was too proud to line up with a large army against the sky-plague.

This is Beowulf's tragic flaw.

20.)Lines 2532-2533 This fight is not yours, nor is it up to any man except me.

This is Beowulf’s first problem. He is old and should have let his warriors fight the dragon like Hrothgar did with Grendel. Beowulf is to proud to let that happen though. Any monster that terrorizes his land is going to have to fight him.

21.) Lines 442-455 "If Grendel wins, it will be a gruesome day;... Fate goes ever as fate must."

There is no way Beowulf is going to let Grendel win with out a fight. Beowulf is saying that no matter what he will fight to the death. He is also willing to fight under the conditions of Grendel and fight with no armor, which he must do in order to defeat Grendel because he can’t be killed with anything made by man.

13-18

13.) Line 102-109 ~ Grendel was the name of this grim demon haunting the marches, marauding round the heath...Cain got no good from committing that murder

Grendel is from Cain's Clan. Cain killed his brother Abel, because he was jealous and God cast him into exile. From Cain's anger and sadness came Grendel and other monsters. Like Cain Grendel can't be helped by other men because of the mark placed on him by god, so he lives as an outcast.
14.) Lines 799-802 ~ When they joined the struggle there was something they could not have know at the time, that no blade on earth, no blacksmith’s art could ever damage their demon opponent.
Grendel has been cursed with the mark of Cain. The manmade weapons don’t work on the curse. This may be a foreshadow to Beowulf not being able to use Unferth’s sword on Grendel’s mother. The sword he used to cut her head off was made by the giants.

15.) Lines 2802-2808  Order my troop to construct a barrow…as they steer ships across the wide and shrouded waters.

Beowulf’s final instructions. He orders his troop to build him a barrow by the sea so he will always be remembered. He may have told him to put it on the coast not only to travelers will see it and remember him, but to try and ward off any kings looking to take of Geatland. Seeing the barrow would remind them that Beowulf was a fierce warrior and may have trained others to be as great as he.

16.) Lines 2401-2407 ~The Lord of the Geats took eleven comrades… and was now added as a thirteenth to their number.

One leader, Beowulf, and twelve followers alludes Jesus and his twelve disciples.

17.) Lines 2510-2515  Beowulf spoke, made a formal boast for the last time…if the evil one will only abandon his earth-fort and face me in the open.

Beowulf’s final boast. He understands that he is old and probably won’t live through this battle. He is putting everything on the line and leaving everything up to fate. He will go into the battle with the will to win, he won’t stop fighting until the dragon is dead.

18.) Lines 2207-2211 …the wide kingdom reverted to Beowulf. He ruled it well for fifty winters, grew old and wise as warden of the land until one began to dominate the dark…

This is a parallel to Hrothgar’s life in Heorot. Hrothgar also ruled for fifty years until a monster (Grendel) wreaked havoc among his nation. The same is happening to Beowulf.
